Not everyone needs a complete pivot to a new field. This page is for anyone still figuring out what kind of change they’re actually looking for.

So, before we dive into career assessments and researching training programs, it’s worth asking: Why are you seeking a change?

Radical Changers vs. Lateral Movers

There are essentially two camps of people: Radical Changers and Lateral Movers.

Radical Changers are what most people immediately envision when considering a career change — they’re people who are looking for a total pivot into a new field. The new career path may require additional certifications, training, or even going back to school for a new degree or diploma.

On the other hand, Lateral Movers are people who may only need to change an aspect of their work environment — whether that’s a manager, company culture, or work setting — to resolve their current sense of unfulfillment. Lateral Movers may also include people who just need small adjustments to their current job duties (like shifting from advertising to public relations) rather than an entire career overhaul.

Once you identify what kind of changer you are, it will be easier to start planning your career change. If you’re a Lateral Mover, you may find that you only need to review the Interests & Values section (and that’s okay!). The whole point of this section is to help you find clarity in your goals before you deep dive into planning.

Reviewing Your Transferable Skills

Regardless of the type of changer you are, I highly recommend taking an inventory of your transferable skills. What are your strengths? Think back to what friends, family members, and past managers have said about your strengths. Then look at your resume and try to identify all the gaps (not steps) that you need to address to move to your next role. Try to note at least 1-3 strengths and areas to improve that will help you in a new role.

If you're still feeling a bit lost and prefer writing things out, we've got some guided worksheets and journal prompts to help you sort through your thoughts.
